Why develop a Mission Statement?

Each of us travels this wonderful road we call life.  Developing a roadmap can simply help us reach our destination faster and with greater rewards. A Mission Statement can be written for a business, organization, family, or for an individual. They can be as simple as a single sentence, or as long a as you would like them to be. It is a general course or direction that you would like your life to follow. It can be expanded upon, reduced, mulled over, or completely changed as you see fit.

Where do I start?

Grab a clean piece of paper and just start writing down your ideas. Brainstorm and think about where you are in life and some of the things you would like to accomplish. When you are developing your Mission Statement do not worry about being organized just write down any thought that comes into your head. You can organize your thoughts later. Ask yourself questions like:

What kind of person do I want to be?

What am I passionate about?

Who can help me achieve my dreams?

Am I satisfied with what I have achieved?

Where do I want to be in the future?

What are the character traits that I would like to develop?

What is most important is that when you are finished you should have a sense of happiness, a feeling of control, and a plan to march by in being the person that you truly want to be!

Keep the Mission Statement in a place where you can see it on a regular basis and don’t be afraid to adjust it as you feel necessary.

An example of a Mission Statement:

I will put forth every effort possible to achieve my dreams and goals. I will put my family first, above all other things that may try to distract me. I will conquer the fear inside of me when obstacles are place in my path. I will do my best to help others. I will live my life in a way that will make me proud of who I am as a person.
