"When you develop yourself to the point where your belief in yourself is so strong that you know that you can accomplish anything you put your mind to, your future will be unlimited."

Motivation – Through Establishing Goals

Everyone has some idea of where they would like to be in the future, but the question is: How do we get there? Establishing goals and writing them down will help you to find the answer to this question. Without a plan it will be difficult to achieve success. Years from now you may find yourself asking the question: What happened to all of the things I wanted to accomplish. Stop wandering aimlessly and begin developing your plan!

How do I start the process of Establish Goals?

Develop both Short Term Goals and Long Term Goals.

A.     Write down your Goals.

B.     Develop your Plan.

C.     Implement the Plan and Stay Focused!

Health as a Motivator

We all know that when we are unhealthy it is very hard to be motivated. Being overweight, smoking, drinking, lack of sleep, and a reluctance to exercise all contribute to our lack of motivation. Healthy people accomplish more, feel better, and lead more positive lives.

4 Keys to Staying Healthy and to Achieving More

  1. Make sure you get a good night sleep.  Proper rest is imperative to the ability of human beings to function properly. It affects your health, learning capacity, memory, and yes the motivation to accomplish your goals. Start planning earlier bed times. Turn off the T.V, put away your computer, get the kids to bed earlier, avoid heavy eating or caffeine before bed, and most of all ensure that you have a comfortable sleeping environment.

  1. Control your appetite and eat healthier. One of the hardest things I had to do, but also one of the most important. Learn about the food you are consuming. There are thousands of books available that explain the benefits of healthy eating. Being overweight puts a strain on your heart and your stamina declines dramatically. It all starts in the grocery market. I simply stopped purchasing items that had a negative effect on my health. This alone will make it more difficult for you to cheat and continue any bad habits you have developed.  Change from a high calorie diet to a lower calorie that you enjoy just as much. You don’t have to deprive yourself. You just have to learn to make better choices.

  1. Exercise. – Yep. You have to do it!  I know it was hard for me too! Start slow with a walk around the block and build up slowly. Trying to start off with a 5 K race is definitely not the way to go. The simple truth is that exercise stimulates the brain, improves our physical body, and yes increases our motivation. Going to gym is only one way to exercise. Make exercise fun! I took up Country Line Dancing! Hike a beautiful trail, or find a place to swim, but most of all make sure it is a physical activity you like to do. This will make it easier to accomplish and if you are the type of person who gets bored easily like me then change exercises on a regular basis. Stop making excuses. Find the time. It is too important not to. Exercising for 20 minutes a day will go a long way to improve your health and make you feel better. Consult with you physician before starting any rigorous activity

  1. Relaxation –The pressures of being Mayor taught me that stress and anxiety can be extremely detrimental to your health. Remember that old saying: Take the time and smell the Roses. In today’s world of high pressure jobs, taking care of family and children, and doing your every day household chores it never seems like there is time for you! Plan relaxation time into your schedule. You can’t take care of those you love if you don’t take care of yourself. A weekend getaway or a vacation is a great way to recharge your batteries. Taking time off will go a long way to improving your health, reenergizing you, and yes it will increase your motivation to do even more.

Ron San Angelo’s - Top 10 Ways to Feel Good about You!

A positive outlook on life requires action on your part! You can wander through life like most people or you can make a decision to take control and make your own life the best it can be!

1.      Develop a written Daily Plan and stick to it. Establish goals you want to accomplish and check off the items as you complete them. The sense of accomplishment will make you feel better and you will get more things done! Make sure a reward for accomplishing your tasks is the last thing on you list.

2.      Take pride in your appearance. Dress appropriately for whatever you are doing and look your best. Dressing sharply will make you more confident and you will feel better about yourself. Even if you are just meeting a friend for coffee, going to the grocery store, or doing any kind of routine event.

3.      Learn something new each day. Read a book, go to a seminar, or attend some cultural event. People who invest in themselves and their future are always happier then those who follow the same routine.

4.      Be the best you can be. Don’t take the shortcuts. Make sure that whatever you need to get done you do it to the best of your ability. Take pride in the work that you do and others will come to recognize you for your own abilities.

5.      Help others who need it.  In government I learned there are no better feelings in this world then helping someone else. Join a community group, donate to a needy cause, or lend a helping hand to a friend or neighbor. The reward you will receive in your own self worth will be worth the effort.

6.      Stand for your beliefs and values.  Don’t cave in to the beliefs or values of others when you know in your heart that they are wrong. Stand for core principles such as honesty and integrity. These are the foundations that will give you strength even in the most difficult of times.

7.      Don’t give in to fear. Too often we never challenge ourselves. We let fear stop us from achieving our goals. Start off with the small things you may be afraid of and conquer them one at a time. You will soon find that they were not nearly as difficult to overcome as your mind told you they were.

8.      Think positively. Stop focusing on what you can’t do and focus on what you can. We spend so much time on the negative things in our lives that we forget about all the wonderful things that are happening. Always think about your strengths and build on the positives. Deal with negative issues as quickly as possible and get them out of the way.

9.      Stay away from negative people. As Mayor there were always people who tried to drag you down. They will complain about everything and it will be nearly impossible for you to make them happy. They seem to enjoy wallowing in their misery. You have a choice. Stay and be miserable with them or find more positive people to associate with.

10.  Do something positive for yourself every day. As part of our daily lives we think about everyone else. Our spouses, children, and our friends are all important to our lives, but in order for us to be happy we have to think about ourselves as well.

I Believe You Can Accomplish Anything You Choose

If you could see through my eyes,
I wonder what you'd be feeling right now,
Because I can see you standing
As you really are -

Powerful, sensitive, determined, and gracious.
I can see you achieving everything you choose to achieve.
I can see you being exactly who and what you want to be.
Look through my eyes for an instant,

And you'll see yourself
Conquering all limitations.
Look through my eyes,
And see who you really are

And what you are capable of.
You can accomplish anything --
I know you can.
